On to my review
!
Date. November
24th - 30th First 500-1000 miles or so.
I’ve got them set up
approx. 25mm lower than stock ride height. And the dampening is
set to 15, right in the middle.
I’d have no idea what
any other dampening feels like, as I’ve yet to change them
from 15. lol… they feel really good. Maybe just a little more
soft would be nice for the streets around here.
Things I’ve
noticed:
-
The ride is loads better than stock.
It’s noticeably more firm and predictable.
-
Going over small crests at 75mph indicates
that the car just likes to get up and gently float back down.
-
It’s easier to break/spin the
car around. I feel as if it will do whatever I ask.
-
There is no doubt how sweet these are.
I’ve taken a few for
a ride. Mostly they comment on how smooth the ride is. It’s
not super hard suspension. They cannot believe how’s it goes
from smooth to stiff so gently. LOL…
I think for now, finding a
corner balancer would top the ride height tuning. I’ll just
need to find one. Secondly, just a little bit softer for the street
may be okay. Hell, I have 15 more “soft” clicks, I might
as well play. II’ll continue this, whenever I do something
or somebody says, “wow, that was cool.”
I have not even started testing
these. I’m trying to be nice for a little bit. Then I’ll
treat them right. Stay tuned. Rally x and auto x coming up,,,
Date. December
6, 2003. More miles, adjustment, fun, and some snow.
I finally got around to changing
the dampening settings. I had them set to 15 clicks, right
in the middle. I tried 18 clicks from full hard. So, 3 clicks towards
soft (from 15).
II didn’t really care
for it. It wasn’t bad, I had just gotten used to the firm
ride when it was set a wee bit stiffer. Another thing is the fact
you can actually feel a few clicks. Awesome.
So, back to the adjusting;
I drove for about 15 miles on 18 clicks. Pulled over and in a matter
of 3 minutes, changes all of them to 12 clicks. Much harder than
18. Again, I was impressed that I could actually feel the difference.
The adjusters are on the bottom, but it’s fairly easy to adjust
with the exceptional build quality of the DMS units. You can feel
the click as you turn, and also “feel” the click when
you drive. Very cool.
Snow… I have had the
pleasure of driving in 3-6” of snow.
Unplowed roads. What can I say…easy does it. The turn in on
dry roads in amazing, as I stated earlier. But when on snow and
slick surfaces, it wants to spin a little under road imperfections/undulations.
This is understandable, as my dampening is set to 12 clicks from
full hard. If I wanted a bit more control, I’m sure a little
softer dampening setting would be adequate. I’ll try very
soon. Maybe if the rear was only adjusted softer… It’s
great that you can adjust things like this. This is awesome. J
* note * My power levels
are not near stock. Remember fully ported and polished head with
1mm o/s valves. Improved intake and exhaust manifold flow, etc...
check the "current
modifications" page for more details. At 1 bar of boost
(14.7psi) the torque is obviously going to start spinning wheels
on even slightly wet surfaces…snow, adds to the excitement.
If you know how to drive, it’s not a problem.
I guess if you plan on driving
in the snow for a few months, that softer setting would come in
handy. Too stiff in the snow will result in full ear to ear smiling
if you like that kind of stuff. I do. Open Vehicle Dynamics Area
at work will prove interesting in (snowy) times to come… J
Notes of interest:
-
12 clicks from full hard, is very good.
I cannot wait to try a harder setting on smooth tarmac or race
surface.
-
You can actually feel the clicks when
adjusting and feel what a difference a
few clicks makes when driving.
-
Tons of adjustability in these DMS
40mm GOLDS.
II’ve only witnessed
18-12 clicks from hard, and I’m sold. In other words, I only
made adjustments in 20% of the available range. What the hell am
I waiting for? Nothing. It feels great. And if it’s not broke
don’t fix it… wait, maybe “if you can adjust it,
adjust it”. Time will tell. These are a keeper, 1000 miles
and rising.
To be continued…
Date, May
27th, 2004 Countless miles and no problems.
Well about 5,000 more miles have been put
on since the last review. And I am still very satisfied with the
predictability and performance for these 40mm Golds. I have done
a bit of rally and club racing
and the results were very good. Loose, but not too loose for rally,
with a bit less dampening in the front, keeps the rear moving in
the dirt and gravel. Very strong and durable.
Along with rally(we could talk about that
all day...) I've also been able to try some open lapping days and
autocross at BeaveRun.
. Beaverun is a llocal Motorsports Complex that I have the pleasure
of working as an instructor. The Coilovers performed to every bit
of my expectations. I never turned them to full stiff and they held
the ST-185 to the track with ease. I really need some race rubber
to go much further. I will add data when I am able to. If anyone
has any questions that I may answer, feel free to email me at chris@rallyg4.com
